05 How imidacloprid works
Imidacloprid is an ectoparasiticide belonging to the chloronicotinyl group of compounds.
It binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the insect nervous system, causing interruption of nerve transmission, paralysis and death of the flea.
After topical application, the solution is rapidly distributed over the animal’s skin and coat. Systemic absorption is very low and is not relevant to the clinical efficacy of the product.
In addition to its activity against adult fleas, imidacloprid also acts against flea larvae in the surroundings of a treated animal.
